Drinkers Hall of Fame: John L Sullivan

Drinker’s Hall of Fame
John L Sullivan

Bareknuckle and Gloved Boxing World Champion, John L Sullivan is the epitome of macho which explains why his picture is often used on the internet as a meme joking about manliness. He was a major star in the sporting world at the time, earning over one million dollars and becoming famed for his bouts. Some estimates find he may have won over 200 fights.

Just as impressive as his fighting abilities is his drinking ability. He would drink in taverns across the nation buying rounds or the house and fighting any challengers. His popularity grew to the point where his picture was on display in bars nationwide. Most impressively was his fight in 1889 where he went 75 rounds to win the championship, this was accomplished after a 36 hour bender. Arriving either hungover or drunk, Sullivan went the distance drinking between rounds, further maintaining his reputation.
